Four Injured In Shooting Near Day Care On South Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four people were injured in a shooting near a day care on the South Side Wednesday afternoon.

Chicago Police say the victims were in a vehicle in the 5400 block of South Loomis shortly before 2 p.m. when another vehicle pulled alongside it and fired shots. Two people inside the vehicle were shot and two others were injured by shattered glass. Another passenger was unharmed.

The victims, all males, self-transported themselves to Holy Cross Hospital. Two men, ages 20 and 24, were hospitalized at Holy Cross with injuries from shattered glass. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the arms and was later transferred to Mt. Sinai where his condition stabilized. A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest and transferred to Mt. Sinai in critical condition.

The owner of a nearby day care says one bullet pierced the building's door while children were inside, but it did not come close to hitting anyone.

A number of parents expressed their frustration as they picked up their kids.

"The fact that somebody's shooting around these babies, it's unacceptable" said parent Kevin Nieves. "Children could have got hurt. Children could have been killed. We can do better than this."
