School Teaching Students '7 Habits Of Highly Effective People'

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Logan Square school that teaches students the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People celebrated its academic success on Friday with a program called Leadership Day.

Students at Charles Darwin Elementary School sang about being proactive every day. Four years ago, the school was on academic probation, and on a list to be closed.

No more, said principal Mauricio Segovia.

"Darwin is evolving. We are growing, changing, and evolving," he said.

Physical education teacher Julie Gabrick said the success at Darwin has everything to do with the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People; which she called a process, not a program.

"This is not a phony deal, just a lot of decorations. The kids know these habits," she said.

One student said when he learned those habits, it helped him understand he needs to put the important things in life first.

Students at Darwin have been taught to set goals, and to think big, and have been given various leadership roles.
