Debate Begins Over Fox Lake Cop's Pension

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Should the widow of Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz receive his pension benefits?

The pension board is taking steps to ultimately make that decision.

The board has set a hearing on the Village of Fox Lake's request to have a say in whether Melodie Gliniewicz should be given the money.

Joe Gliniewicz staged his suicide to look like a murder in September, 2015.

Officials say he did that because he figured he was about to be charged for stealing money from the Fox Lake police department's youth explorers program.

Now his wife, who has also been implicated in the scheme, wants her husbands pension, which could add up to more than $1 million over the next 20 years.

Village Administrator Anne Marrin says its important that Fox Lake has a chance to make its case before the pension board.

"We want to have a voice for taxpayer," she said.

The board will decide whether village officials get to weigh in at a special meeting on May 25.
