Supermarket Robbed At Gunpoint In Quiet, Cop-Filled Chicago Neighborhood

(CBS) – An armed suspect last week robbed a supermarket in a neighborhood that, in theory, is one of Chicago's safest.

Edison Park is home to several Chicago police officers and a grocery store called Happy Foods.

"You would have never thought it would have happened here," Leticia Alvarez, a store employee, says of the incident that occurred Friday afternoon.

Surveillance video shows a man hovering in the produce section -- just waiting, store manager Donald Lappe tells CBS 2's Jim Williams.

He kept checking on the cashiers up front. When they were alone, he made his move.

"He walks up front with a little bag of tomatoes and he pulls out a gun and he takes the money from the two registers," Lappe says.

Gun in hand, he reached into the registers and grabbed hundreds of dollars. Then he casually walked out.

Alvarez was bagging groceries.

"I was in shock at first. I couldn't believe it. It just hit me -- 'Oh, my god, we just got robbed,'" she says.

Oddly, many Chicago police officers are loyal Happy Foods customers.

No one was hurt. In the ten years the current owner has had Happy Foods, it was the first robbery.

There have been no arrests.
