Cubs' David Ross On PED Skepticism, Discussion: 'We've Done This To Ourself'

(CBS) Following a week in which Cubs ace pitcher Jake Arrieta revealed that he's heard whispers throughout the game about high-profile players questioning whether his dramatic career turnaround has fueled in part by performance-enhancing drugs, teammate and catcher David Ross said hard workers who accomplish great feats like Arrieta are victims of cheaters of the past.

"The bad part is past people's mistakes in our game," Ross said on the Mully and Hanley Show on Friday morning. "We've done this to ourself. The players who have cheated and tried to cheat and continue to cheat create this. It's nobody's fault but our own as the Major League Baseball organization. And we've got to try to continue to clean it up. The union is doing a phenomenal job of trying to put as much in place to deter these guys from cheating, but obviously it's not enough. There's a lot of money out there. Guys want to take the risk."

The reigning National League Cy Young winner, Arrieta has never tested positive on any drug test, and he's regarded as one of the hardest-working players in the game. Ross has seen that up close.

"This guy is a specimen, physically and mentally as good as it gets," Ross said. "He works his tail off. It's a lifestyle for him. It's not even 'this is what he's doing for his craft.' It's a lifestyle."
