Suspect In Rogers Park Break-In Caught On Video

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police believe surveillance video will be key in cracking the case that involves a break-in in Rogers Park, reports CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot.

The video shows the man wearing a surgical mask. He has a red mark next to his right eye. It's either a cut, or tattoo.

Police say he made his way into businesses at a Rogers Park commercial building last week.

"I just really hope we find this guy I mean, there's no reason for him to be taking anything from other people," said Jennifer Au.

Au's family owns the soon-to be-opened Rogers Pier Seafood Bar and Grill. Au says she thinks the man climbed a gate.

"He must have taken a crowbar and cranked open the door because when we went to look back there, it was just broken in," Au said.

Once inside, he is seen covering the first camera he sees with a rag. He made his way downstairs, looking directly into another camera. That's when you can see his very distinctive red, white and black classic "Jordan" basketball shoes. He crouched down after that hoping not to be captured on any other cameras.

"He didn't take anything and the reason why is because he knew there were so many cameras here," Au said. "He even came into the camera room here and he realized there's a bunch of cameras and that he's on camera."

Au says the man then made his way to the liquor store.

"He went next door and stole some alcohol," she said.

That's when an alarm went off and the man left.

Police are telling people who own businesses in the area to be aware of anyone loitering, especially at closing time. It's believed that the suspect in the break-in was there the day before.
