Young Bicyclist Killed After Being Struck By Dump Truck In Burbank

(STMW) -- A 13-year-old boy died after he was hit by a dump truck while riding a bike Friday afternoon in southwest suburban Burbank.

The dump truck was turning right from westbound 87th Street onto northbound Latrobe Avenue shortly before 2:30 p.m. when it struck 13-year-old Brian Schrader, who was riding a bicycle eastbound on the sidewalk of 87th and crossing Latrobe, according to Burbank police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Schrader, who lived in the 5400 block of West 85th Street in Burbank, suffered multiple fractures in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:37 p.m., authorities said. An autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of his death was scheduled for Saturday.

The 69-year-old driver of the truck was cited for failure to exercise due care and released, police said in a statement. Police did not release his name Saturday, but said he possessed a valid CDL and was "deeply distraught over the incident."

Police said there were no indications that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. The South Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.
