Lane Tech High School Principal Latest To Quit CPS

By Lauren Victory

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Another Chicago Public School principal is calling it quits, apparently sparked by the budget crisis faced by the district.

Lane Tech Principal Kathryn Anderson is leaving for a job in the suburbs. It's the second time in has many years that the position was been vacated for one outside the city.

"The parents also see the difference when a new person comes in and they have to re-learn the entire methodology of the school," said Lane Tech parent Clyde Partner.

Anderson's departure is a sign of a potential pattern.

Foreman High School principal Daniel Zimmerman put is name of the growing list of departures, 33 resignation letters turned in so far this year.

He points to uncertainty surrounding the Illinois budget.

"When people are thinking that they're going to have to do this important work without an assistant principal because that position might get cut from the budget or without key teachers who've been part of the progress of the schools, it's frustrating for the principals and I think that's why you are going to see more of them giving notice," Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman is leaving for a job in Nevada.

"I mean, the one thing you can say about Nevada, it's not going to be perfect but they have a budget," he said.

CPS leaders say the number of losses is no different than in past years, but the reasons given seem related.

"As long as there are games being played about our finances, that puts CPS at a competitive disadvantage," said Dr. Janice Jackson.
