Man Charged With Reckless Homicide After Fatal Lawndale Crash

A man has been charged with reckless homicide after a crash that left a woman dead Thursday morning in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.

Renee D. Showers, 62, was driving just before 6 a.m. in the 700 block of South Kostner when another vehicle collided with hers, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Showers was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:39 a.m., authorities said. She lived in the 800 block of South Kilbourn.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle, 28-year-old Heriberto Aguirre, ran away from the crash. Officers took him into custody later that day.

Aguirre, of the 2600 block of South Kostner Avenue, was charged with one felony count each of reckless homicide involving a motor vehicle and failure to report a fatal accident, police announced Saturday.

He is scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday.
