Lawmakers To Discuss Cybersecurity Threats At Chicago Hearing

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A congressional subcommittee was holding a field hearing in Chicago on Monday to discuss cybersecurity threats in Chicagoland and throughout the country.

U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Illinois) said the Information Technology Subcommittee of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform wanted to hear from cybersecurity experts – and Advocate Health Care, frankly – about the continuing problems they face in keeping data secure.

"The breaches that occur in the health care industry, in the retail industry, and many of the industries, and even visiting places like Microsoft; the things they have to do to ward off all of the breaches. So just the matter of the number of attacks that have occurred, or had already occurred before I became ranking member on the committee," she said.

In a series of hearings, members of Congress want to hear how government and the private sector can work together to ward off cyber threats.

What can Congress do?

"That's why we're having the hearing, because we want to hear what they have to say about it, and what their suggestions are, and we really believe that we need to look at public-private partnerships in a lot of ways. One thing we talk about on the government side is how it's hard for us to attract talent, because we're competing with the private sector," she said.

Monday's hearing was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse.
