Woman Pumping Gas Shot In Leg During Robbery Attempt

(STMW) -- A man was taken into custody after he shot a woman during a robbery at a gas station early Wednesday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

At 4:07 a.m., the 55-year-old woman was at a gas station in the 600 block of South Independence when a man walked up, pulled out a handgun and announced a robbery, according to Chicago Police.

The woman was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. The man tried to run away after the shooting, but a Chicago Police sergeant nearby spotted the suspect as he was fleeing and subsequently apprehended him. A weapon was recovered.

The man, 38, was taken into custody and charges against him were pending early Wednesday.
