Blackhawks Select Forward Alexander DeBrincat In NHL Draft

(CBS) The Blackhawks moved Andrew Shaw and loaded up on draft picks, then they got busy on Saturday morning.

With their first pick of the NHL Draft, the Blackhawks selected forward Alexander DeBrincat with the 39th overall pick in the second round.

DeBrincat, who stands at 5-foot-7, tallied 205 points in 128 games during two seasons with the Erie Otters. DeBrincat is just 18 years old.

The Blackhawks followed in the second round and drafted defenseman Chad Krys out of Boston University with the 45th selection, then took forward Artur Kayumov from Russia with the 50th slot.

Chicago's 39th and 45th picks were acquired from Montreal in Friday's trade that sent away Andrew Shaw. The Blackhawks had negotiated with Shaw, but his demands for a contract became too much to squeeze into a tight cap window. Now, the Blackhawks are alleviated in working around the $73 million cap.

At No. 83 overall in the third round, Chicago took 17-year-old goalie Wouter Peeters, who most recently played for the Czech Republic's EC Salzburg under-20 team and under-18 team.

The Blackhawks took 18-year-old defenseman Lucas Carlsson  at No. 110 overall in the fourth round. He played for Brynas in the Swedish Hockey League.

Three picks later, they took center Nathan Noel, a 19-year-old who had 57 points in 61 games for St. John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Chicago selected left wing Mathias From in the fifth round at No. 143 overall. The 18-year-old From had 21 points for Rogle in the Swedish Junior League last season.

In the sixth round, the Blackhawks took 20-year-old defenseman Blake Hillman, who had 11 points in 39 games for the University of Denver last season.

To round out their draft, the Blackhawks selected 18-year-old defenseman Jake Ryczek in the seventh round. He split the season between Sioux City and Waterloo in the USHL.
