Thousands Of Volunteers Fan Out Across The City For 'Chicago Cares' Event

(CBS) -- Classroom painting and tree planting are just some of the things on the agenda for the Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon today.

Chicago Cares CEO Jenne Myers told CBS 2 the Serve-a-thon is about making the city of Chicago better.

"We've got 5,000 people going out to 29 sites all across the city in different neighborhoods," Myers said. "They're doing different activities. We're beautifying schools, we're painting, gardening and working with adults in senior homes."

The work being done will be featured on social media sites with the #ChiCares hashtag.

Among the volunteers are Joseph Ocol and the Englewood Chess Team, who will be working at Earle Stem Elementary. Ocol was expelled from the Chicago Teachers Union after refusing to take part in a one day teachers strike in April.

Today's activities will conclude with a volunteer appreciation party in Daley Plaza.
