Levine: Melky Cabrera Out With Sore Wrist

By Bruce Levine--

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago White Sox will be without left fielder Melky Cabrera for three to four games while he recovers from a sprained wrist.

Cabrera initially hurt his right wrist hitting a wall in Cleveland two weekends ago. On Tuesday, Cabrera banged the wrist in the field and also aggravated the injury on a swing in the fifth inning.

"Originally I hurt myself in Cleveland," Cabrera said. "I dove to catch a ball and I hurt it as my wrist hit the grass. I have been living with that soreness since that time."

Cabrera has been the most consistent White Sox hitter all season, as he's hitting .297 with eight homers, 37 RBIs and an .802 OPS. Manager Robin Ventura has inserted the 32-year-old Cabrera as his cleanup hitter numerous times the last couple of weeks.

Cabrera was told to sit it out after an MRI revealed a sprain was the extent of the injury.

"This is difficult because I want to play," he said before Wednesday's game. "The doctor said to take a rest for a couple of days because of the inflamed wrist. I need to play because the team needs me"

Cabrera signed a three-year, $42-million contract before the 2015 season.

"This is a good group," Cabrera said about his team. "Nobody quits, no matter what the situation is. We play hard as a team every day"
