Wauconda Man Who Threatened To Blow Up Cops Undergoing Mental Evaluation

(CBS) – A 49-year-old Wauconda man was in police custody and undergoing a psychiatric evaluation Friday after he allegedly threatened to blow up officers he hoped to lure to his home.

Andreas Stachel is the suspect who prompted police in the north suburb to vacate residences around his home at 403 Lakeshore Blvd. An employee at Super Pawn in Round Lake alerted authorities that Stachel said he planned to lure police to his residence "with the intention of blowing up his home with 20 lbs of C-4," Wauconda police said in a news release Friday. Stachel reportedly was pawning a rifle and also told the shop employee he was terminally ill.

Police took Stachel into custody and searched his home after obtaining a search warrant. A variety of police agencies found four illegal explosive devices and a large quantity of cannabis, the Wauconda department said. Numerous firearms and ammunition were also seized, they said.

Stachel was transported to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Once he's released, he was expected to appear before a judge in bond court, police said.

He is charged with unlawful possession of explosives, unlawful use of weapons and unlawful possession of cannabis – all felonies.
