Lumberjack Athletes Compete In 'Timbersports' Event

(CBS) -- If you hear them yelling "timber!" in Tinley park this weekend, don't panic.

CBS 2's Vince Gerasole introduces us to the lumberjacks sharpening their axes for a national competition.

Arden Cogar's a lumber jack, and that's OK.

"I have a lot of really neat scars as a result of competing in this sport," he says. "You play with sharp objects you get cut."

This cutting-edge competition is called "timbersports."

When Nathan Waterfield's not working his own tree-trimming business, he's logging time on the circuit.

"It adds stress, but in a way it relieves stress," he says.

With specially grown and debarked tree trunks already arriving, national competition at the Tinley Park Convention Center will be like nothing the area's ever saw.

Joel Koester of the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau has worked for three years to land the event. It sold out in just a month.

Most of these modern-day lumberjacks sharpened their skills in college, studying forestry and competing on woodsman teams.
