Cubs Shuffle Roster Ahead Of 2nd-Half Opener

(CBS) The Cubs made a series of minor roster moves Friday ahead of of the second-half opener against the Rangers, most notably activating catcher David Ross and left-hander Clayton Ricard from the disabled list.

Ross had been out with a concussion, while Richard had been dealing with a blister on his pitching hand. In other moves, Chicago put right-hander Trevor Cahill on the 15-day DL with patellar tendinitis in his right knee and optioned infielder Munenori Kawasaki to Triple-A Iowa. Additionally, right-handed reliever Joel Peralta cleared waivers and elected for free agency.

Ross is hitting .234 with six homers, 23 RBIs and a .790 OPS this season.

Richard has a 7.30 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. Cahill has been reliable out of the bullpen, with a 3.07 ERA in 41 innings across 33 appearances this season.

Kawasaki is 1-for-3 at the plate this year for the Cubs, appearing in three games.

Peralta allowed four earned runs in four innings for the Cubs this season.
