At Least 2 Dead After Fiery Collision Between Truck, Motorcycles In Fox Lake

(CBS) – At least two people were killed and five others were seriously injured Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck collided with several motorcycles in far north suburban Fox Lake.

The incident occurred around 3:10 p.m. on State Park Road north of Route 12.

A pickup truck veered into the wrong lanes, and struck two motorcycles with two riders on each, police said.

"It appears the truck drifted across the lanes of traffic, striking the motorcycles," Fox Lake Police Chief Russell Laine said.

The truck caught fire after the crash, as did the bikes caught underneath it. All were totally destroyed in the crash and fire.

"You don't see it often. You wish you never saw it, but it leaves a lasting impression," Laine said.

Two people died, including the truck driver, police said. Five bikers were seriously injured.

"Some witnesses to the accident who were able to safely pull some people who were injured from the fire; those were some real heroic people," Laine said.

State Lake Road was closed for about six hours after the crash. It was not immediately clear what caused the truck driver to veer into the wrong lane. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
