Child In Hospital After Being Found In Hot Car In McHenry

UPDATED: 7/20/2016, 2:45 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A four-year-old child was hospitalized after being discovered inside a hot car in blazing summer heat.

The girl was found unconscious on Tuesday afternoon, CBS 2's Charlie De Mar reports.

Hours later, the mini van was towed from the home on Holly Court in McHenry, and police continued to investigate.

"Obviously to be in a car on a day like today or any other day I mean you are worried about the child's safety and health," said neighbor Kyle Kerker.

On a day with temperatures in the 90s, the heat inside a closed car can reach 124 degrees within 30 minutes.

The condition of the child was not known. So far this year, 19 children have died in vehicles nationwide.

On Wednesday, the McHenry County Sheriff's office said in a statement that the girl overheard her family discuss plans to go to her grandmother's house for dinner.

Without telling her parents, the girl went outside and got into the car. About 15 minutes later, the family began to look for her and found her in the car.
