Chicago's Steamy Weather To Give Way To Cooler Temperatures

(CBS) -- Temperatures rose to the high-80s and low-90s for much of the Chicago region Thursday, but a true heat wave is not in the cards.

Storms could move in overnight. And on Friday, a cold front is expected to keep temperatures in the mid-80s. The weekend is expected to be in the low-80s with clear skies, before temperatures get warmer next week, hitting near 90 on Tuesday.

An air-quality alert -- for people with respiratory conditions -- was in effect until midnight tonight. Vulnerable populations are advised to limit their time outdoors.

As summers go, this one hasn't been precedent-breaking. There have been 14 days where the temperature has hit 90 in 2016; the annual average is 15.
