A Family With Child Paralyzed By A Bullet Finds Comfort From Stranger

CHICAGO (CBS) – Since June, 13 children under the age of 11 have been victims of gun violence in Chicago.

Among the heartbreaking stories is the shooting of Devon Quinn, who was paralyzed by a bullet in the back. Devon is 3 years old.

As CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports, the shooting happened on Father's Day.

"I can't really explain it … the hurt," Devon's dad, Desmond Bell, said. "We got caught in the crossfire."

A 23-year-old has been charged and is in jail.

Devon is now just two floors below a room that Bob Shea occupied at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Guillain-Barre nearly killed him over a decade ago.

Shea and his friend Ed Kane, who is in the final stages of Lou Gehrig's disease, founded an organization, Devices 4 the Disabled. It repurposes medical supplies from people who no longer need them.

Devon's parents are getting a van through Devices 4 the Disabled, after their vehicle was riddled by bullets on Father's Day.

Devon's parents are high school sweethearts, and they are with Devon constantly.

Devon never asks what happened. The family was on their way to pick mom up from work.

Since then, she had to quit her job to hold vigil. It is a fight to save his life.

The car is still in impound, and they don't want to see it again.

The van they received, given to Devices 4 the Disabled by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous, has only 15,000 miles on it.

"It's going to help us out a lot," said Devon's dad.

"It's all yours," Shea said, checking off at least one worry for the family.

The family hopes to have Devon home in time for his fourth birthday in October.
