Home Invaders Stab Four People, Family's Dog In Buffalo Grove

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four people and a German shepherd were stabbed early Wednesday during a home invasion in north suburban Buffalo Grove.

Shortly after midnight, two masked men broke into the home in the 400 block of St. Marys Parkway, according to a statement from Buffalo Grove police. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that the front door had been forced open and there were several broken windows.

Witnesses told police that a man with a "large hunting knife" repeatedly stabbed the 49-year-old homeowner, police said. Three other residents and the family's dog, a German shepherd, were also stabbed.

During the struggle, the homeowner managed to grab a handgun and open fire, prompting the suspects to run away, police said. The four victims, all between the ages of 16 and 49, were taken to hospitals, where the homeowner was listed in serious condition and the others were all treated and released. An officer transported the dog to the Veterinary Specialty Center.

The witnesses gave investigators descriptions of the suspects and officers from the Wheeling Police Department spotted three people matching those descriptions at East Lake Cook and Weiland roads in Buffalo Grove, police said. Evidence of their involvement in the home invasion, including a blood-stained hunting knife, was subsequently found.

Police said the three persons of interest were being questioned Wednesday morning. Investigators are confident there is no further threat to the community.
