Man Charged After Lying About Shooting Near Navy Pier

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 22-year-old man has been charged after shooting himself in the leg and then telling authorities he had been wounded in a robbery near Navy Pier early Saturday, according to Chicago Police.

Jimmy E. Moore faces a felony count of unlawful possession of a handgun, according to the Cook County sheriff's office. He was ordered held on a $100,000 bond at a Sunday hearing.

The man initially told investigators he was walking down the street in the 600 block of East Illinois near the tourist attraction about 2:20 a.m. when someone with a gun walked up, demanded his things and then shot Moore in the leg when he didn't hand anything over, police said.

Surveillance footage instead showed the man shooting himself, police said. His condition was stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A spokesman said Navy Pier was closed at the time of the shooting.

Moore is due in court again Sept. 2.
