South Side Pastor's Home Ransacked; TVs And Computers Stolen

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The rectory of an Ashburn neighborhood church was ransacked last week.

"As one of the detectives said, it was the worst pillaging of a rectory he had seen," said Monsignor Richard Zborowski, pastor of St. Thomas More Church.

The burglars got in Friday morning, through a second floor window of the rectory in the 2800 block of West 81st Street.

"You always feel violated, but in this case they estimated it to be the worst rectory rampage they had ever seen," he said.

Zborowski said the thieves ransacked the first and second floors and the basement, and took two new computers and some TVs.

"My dogs barked in the middle of the night, which they do if they hear something outside, but I kind of hushed them and went back to sleep," he said.

The pastor said it's best that he didn't get up, "because it's always said that people who rob at night are more prone to do you damage if you come out and confront them."

Zborowski said it took two days to pick up the pieces. The church's insurance will cover the stolen property, but the pastor said now St. Thomas More has to get a security system.

"We're going to have to do some things to make ourselves even more theft-proof than we think we are," he said.

Police said no one was in custody as of Monday night.
