Man Charged With Robbing Clarendon Hills Bank At Gunpoint

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man charged with robbing a bank at gunpoint in Clarendon Hills is suspected of at least six other west suburban bank robberies, according to the FBI.

Kevin Brooks, 41, of Wheaton faces one federal count of bank robbery, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court.

At 11:53 a.m. Aug. 5, a man entered the PNC Bank branch at 300 Holmes Ave. in Clarendon Hills, and placed a deposit slip on the counter, according to the complaint. The teller did not immediately read the slip because they expected the man to provide cash for a deposit.

When the teller asked the man about the deposit, he pointed at the slip and whispered words to the effect of, "I have a gun," according to the complaint. The deposit slip read, "Give me all your cash and no one gets hurt."

The robber lifted up his shirt slightly and showed the teller a black and silver handgun tucked into his waistband, according to the complaint.

The teller gave the robber the cash in their drawer, and the suspect left the bank with the cash and the demand note, according to the complaint.

He got away with about $2,869 in cash, according to the complaint. The teller did not include any dye packs or tracking devices with the money because he had displayed a weapon.

A surveillance camera at the Jewel-Osco store next door to the bank caught the suspect getting in and out of a silver four-door Volvo with an Illinois Temporary Registration placard, according to the complaint.

Authorities asked the Illinois Tollway Authority if any vehicles had toll violations around the time of the bank robbery, according to the complaint. About 12:05 p.m., a silver Volvo with temporary plates committed a violation where Route 83 intersects I-88.

The registration number was issued to Brooks on July 22, 2016, for a 2002 Volvo S60, according to the complaint. Brooks' driver's license photograph matched the description of the suspect.

Brooks's probation officer also identified him as the suspect in the surveillance photos, according to the complaint.

Brooks had his initial appearance in federal court Monday.

According to the FBI, the suspect from the Clarendon Hills robbery is also believed to have robbed six other west suburban banks over the last three months, including:

• Sept. 13 at the Citibank branch at 800 S. Barrington Rd. in Streamwood;
• Sept. 6 at the Chase Bank branch at 2150 Bloomingdale Rd. in Glendale Heights;
• Sept. 2 at the West Suburban Bank branch at 17W754 St. in Oakbrook Terrace;
• Aug. 23 at the BMO Harris branch at 625 Army Trail Rd. in Addison;
• Aug. 13 at the Chase Bank branch at 2555 Golf Rd. in Hoffman Estates; and
• June 22 at a US Bank branch at 5401 St. Charles Rd. in Berkeley.

Brooks has not been charged with those robberies.
