3 Killed, 8 Wounded In Thursday Shootings Across Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three men were killed — including two slain in separate Eisenhower Expressway attacks — and at least eight more people were wounded in shootings across Chicago on Thursday.
The latest homicide happened about 2:30 p.m. in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. A 28-year-old man was walking in the 1100 block of West 57th Street when a vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire, according to Chicago Police. The man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at St. Bernard Hospital. The Cook County medical examiner's office has not released his name.
Shortly before noon, Illinois State troopers responded to a call of shots fired in the eastbound lanes of the Eisenhower at Central Avenue, where 23-year-old Devon Almon had been shot while riding as a passenger, authorities said. The driver took him to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he died at 12:20 p.m.
About six hours earlier, another fatal shooting happened in the westbound lanes of the expressway at Laramie Avenue. Johnathan Ortiz, 22, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 6:18 a.m., authorities said. He lived in the 3100 block of West Monroe. A female wounded in the shooting was listed in critical condition at Stroger, state police said.
The most recent nonfatal shooting happened at 11:19 p.m. in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side. An 18-year-old woman was walking in the 3000 block of North Kostner when a male in a passing white sedan shot her in the left forearm. She was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where her condition stabilized, police said.
About 9:20 p.m., a man in his 20s was walking in the 10100 block of South Calumet in the Far South Side Roseland neighborhood when two other males walked up and shot him in the abdomen, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.
Fifteen minutes before that, a 17-year-old boy was walking in the alley in the 7800 block of South Maryland in the Grand Crossing neighborhood when he heard shots and realized he'd been hit in the buttocks and wrist. His condition was stabilized at Christ Medical Center, police said.
About 8:20 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg, buttocks and arm in the 200 block of South Lotus Avenue in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. His condition was stabilized at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
At 6:35 p.m., two men were shot wounded in an East Garfield Park drive-by shooting. The men, ages 20 and 21, were standing on the sidewalk in the 3000 block of West Walnut when a tan van drove past and someone inside fired shots, hitting the younger man in the arm and the older in the leg. Their conditions were stabilized at Mount Sinai, police said.
Thursday's first shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. A 20-year-old man was sitting in a vehicle parked in the 3000 block of West 39th when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot him in the arm, police said. He was in good condition at Mount Sinai.
