Dolton Man Charged With Loop Bank Robbery
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A south suburban man has been charged with robbing a bank Tuesday morning in the Loop.
Demetrius Witt, 42, of Dolton faces one count of bank robbery, according to a federal complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court.
At 9:07 a.m., he walked into the Fifth Third Bank branch at 57 E. Randolph, walked up to a teller and said, "I would like to open an account," according to the complaint. He was holding a Fifth Third promotional banking folder.
The robber then pulled a note out of the folder and placed it on the counter. It read, "I have a gun," according to the complaint. The teller stopped reading the note after realizing it was a robbery.
The teller pulled cash from a drawer and also placed a GPS tracking device in the money, according to the complaint.
The robber took the note and money, and left the bank, according to the complaint. The teller activated the bank alarm and called 911.
A description of the robber was read over the Chicago Police radio, and officers were also monitoring the location of the GPS tracker, according to the complaint.
Less than an hour after the robbery, officers tracked the device to a black Cadillac CTS and stopped it in the 1700 block of South Michigan Avenue, according to the complaint. The driver matched the description of the robber.
The bank tellers also identified Witt as the robber, according to the complaint.
Witt had an initial court appearance Tuesday night before Judge Gilbert, according to FBI spokesman Garrett Croon.
