Man Shot By DEA In Joliet Faces Attempted Murder Charge

(CBS) -- A man shot by Drug Enforcement Adminstration agents during a drug sting in southwest suburban Joliet over the summer now faces an attempted murder charge.

Authorities say 31-year-old Morris resident Adan Godinez fired shots at two DEA task force members after trying to sell more than 2 kilograms of cocaine to an undercover agent Aug. 30 outside the Louis Joliet Mall, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Adan and 44-year-old Fernando Godinez, the Cicero man who owned the cocaine, had driven to the mall to meet with the undercover agent, federal prosecutors said. The younger man got into the agent's car to make the transaction but ran and opened fire when he saw officers pulling up, prosecutors said.

Agents shot Adan Godinez, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said. No agents or officers were hurt.

Both men were previously indicted on several federal gun and drug charges. Adan Godinez now faces counts of attempted murder, drug conspiracy, drug possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm in a trafficking crime and brandishing a firearm, prosecutors said Wednesday. Excluding attempted murder, Fernando Godinez faces the same charges, with an additional count of firearm possession by a convicted felon.

Both are scheduled for arraignment Thursday. It wasn't clear if they are related.
