Two minutes in, corrections officers arrive and try to break it up. But an inmate then grabs a lunch tray, and is tackled to the ground.

Before it was all over, ambulances took eight inmates and two corrections officers to the hospital.

"Some of them had puncture wounds, some have injuries from just fists," said Nneka Jones Tapia, executive director of the Cook County Jail.

Jail officials credit corrections officers for their quick action. "They responded from other divisions of our compound and really showed a united effort and because of their swift efforts we were able to contain it pretty quickly."

But not before inmates from three seperate tiers fought, over about an hour.

"It could have been over 100 detainees involved," Jones Tapia said. "All fighting."

While jail officials still aren't sure what started the brawl, they are sure, there will consequences for those involved.

None of the injuries were life threatening. Jones Tapia says dozens of inmates are likely to be punished.
