Anxious Illinois Voters Glad Campaign 2016 Almost Over

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Many voters seemed to have a bitter taste in their mouths as the 2016 presidential election season drew to a close on Election Day.

"Just disgusting. Well, you have both candidates that are kind of terrible, but this is what we get," one voter said at the Lisle Park District recreation center, a polling place in DuPage County.

More than anything, voters said they were happy to be able to cast their ballots.

Susan Robinson said she was excited about voting, even if she and her husband are on opposing sides when it comes to Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

"It's fantastic. I'm just waiting for my husband to show up and cancel my vote," she said.

Robinson and her husband, Scott, were not voting for who you might think. Susan voted for Trump, Scott was voting for Clinton.

"Definitely, I respect Hillary as a woman, and as a woman there is that propensity to want to vote for a woman, but I've just never been a fan of the Clintons. He, on the other hand, finds Trump pretty reprehensible," she said.

Robinson said she and her husband try to respect each other's opinions, "and try not to get in each other's faces too much."

"During the debates, in particular, we laid out the ground rules ahead of time. We've got kids, you know? We don't want them to see us fighting, or hear us fighting about politics. Now, there is a Trump yard sign in my vehicle, because it couldn't quite go in the yard. My husband didn't want that."

Other voters said they were happy that, starting Wednesday, they won't have to see or hear anymore campaign commercials on the TV and radio.
