On a video posted online, Wilcox, 50, was pummeled by several individuals, while onlookers shouted “You Voted Trump!”
The altercation started when his car was rear-ended at Kedzie and Roosevelt in the North Lawndale neighborhood on Wednesday.
As soon as he got out the car, a person at a nearby bus stop yelled, according to Wilcox, “That’s one of those b–ch a– Trump supporters!”
Wilcox said he turned and said, “So what if I’m a Trump supporter? That doesn’t have nothing to do with this.’ ”
Wilcox said he got out to ask for insurance information and that’s when the female driver of the other car started throwing punches. Soon, three men in the back of the car began throwing punches and kicking him, as well.
“The lady actually threw the first shot,” he said. “Then they were all hitting me.”
Police are not saying whether the attack involved politics. One theory, Wilcox said, is that the driver of the car may have targeted him for a robbery by causing the accident.
However, on the video of the incident, onlookers are shouting, “You Voted Trump.”
“Somebody yelled, ‘That’s one of those white boy Trump supporters,” Wilcox said. “I said, ‘What does that have to do with this?’ We’re talking about insurance here.’READ MORE: Vucevic, Bulls Withstand Late Rally By Oklahoma City Thunder
He said he then told them that he did support Trump
“When people were egging them on on the side [the attackers] said, ‘Don’t worry about it, we are going to kick the s–t out of him.’
The fight ended when one of the attackers jumped in Wilcox’s car and drove away.
Wilcox said he grabbed the door and held on for several blocks before finally letting go.
“I saw my life flash before my face,” Wilcox said.
He has cuts and bruises and said he prayed for this life during the ordeal.
“I thank God I am alive. These people do not belong on the street.”
Community activist Andrew Holmes denounced the attack and urged the community to help police find and arrest the attackers.
“I am asking the public to turn these individuals in,” said Holmes. “This should have never happened.MORE NEWS: Blackhawks Fall Short To Colorado Avalanche
“Just because he is a white American doesn’t give you the right to just beat him–just because he voted for Trump or just because this was a fender bender.”
