Bulls' Doug McDermott Placed In Concussion Protocol

By Cody Westerlund--

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Bulls forward Doug McDermott has been placed in the concussion protocol after taking a hard fall in a 106-95 win against the Wizards on Saturday night at the United Center.

Early in the fourth quarter, McDermott swooped in toward the hoop for a dunk attempt but was fouled hard by Wizards forward Markieff Morris while at the top of his jump. Morris hit McDermott's left arm hard, and McDermott lost his balance, falling hard on his left side and appearing to hit his head on the floor.

McDermott wanted to shoot the ensuing free throws, coach Fred Hoiberg said, but the Bulls took him back to the locker room and he sat out the rest of the game. Upon video review, the officials assessed Morris with a flagrant-1 foul.

McDermott suffered a concussion in a game on Oct. 31 and missed one contest after it.

Hoiberg didn't know the extent of McDermott's injury and was uncertain whether he'd travel for an upcoming West Coast road trip that opens Tuesday in Portland.

"I feel bad for the kid," Hoiberg said.

Bulls teammate Taj Gibson was worried about McDermott.

"The first thing I noticed when I ran up on him after he got hit was he wasn't there," Gibson said. "I've had three concussions in my career, and that's one of the things people understand -- when you hit that floor, that floor tends to smack you pretty hard.

"So when I looked at his eyes as soon as I ran up on him, I didn't like the signs I saw. I told him to take his time."
