The Bernstein Brief: Alshon Jeffery's Suspension Not All That Meaningful

By Dan Bernstein--
CBSChicago.com senior columnist

(CBS) It's surprising news, a big name and a headline. Other than that, the losing receiver Alshon Jeffery for a four-game PED rip doesn't mean a whole lot to the reeling Bears.

First of all, his one single touchdown this year hasn't done much to help a 2-7 team at the bottom of a terrible NFC North. And if Jay Cutler plays like he did in the first half of the latest debacle, the receivers make no difference anyway.

Second, Jeffery has been waiting for the chance to play somewhere else for years now, and nobody expected that he was going to work as hard to cut a deal to stay as he was to find another team at the end of the season. Not to mention the continued trust issues from the Bears side that haven't been resolved, and it was already unlikely that he was going to be here in 2017.

So the effect of his absence could just mean a higher draft pick for general manager Ryan Pace, and the outside chance that a total collapse catalyzes a chance for Pace to finally hire his own head coach, but that may have happened regardless.
