Woman Beaten, Robbed In Bucktown

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A young woman was beaten and robbed while walking to work early Monday in the Bucktown neighborhood.

The 23-year-old woman was walking north on the 1600 block of North Claremont Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Monday, when a man approached her from behind and knocked her to the ground, according to Chicago police.

The man grabbed the woman's purse, hit the woman over the head, and fled the scene, police said. The woman was taken to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in good condition. She suffered a cut to her upper lip.

No one was in custody Tuesday morning. Area North detectives were investigating.

Witnesses said someone else was robbed nearby less than a week ago. According to DNAInfo, the victim in that robbery was held up at gunpoint in front of the Clocktower Lofts on Wabansia Avenue. Police did not have any details on that case.

An analysis of crime statistics from the Chicago Police Department showed more than a dozen robberies in the same police district in the first week of November. Police were hosting two community meetings for the 32nd Ward this week, according to Ald. Scott Waguespack's office.
