School Investigates Report Of Sexual Misconduct -- Belatedly, Some Say

(CBS) -- Disturbing letters go out to suburban high school parents, about an alleged case of off-campus sexual misconduct involving students.

There is growing concern and demand for information, CBS 2's Audrina Bigos reports.

At Oak Park River Forest High School, students and parents learned new information Tuesday, about alleged sexual misconduct between students.

The district superintendent says the alleged incident "took place at the home of a district assistant athletic coach while he was out of town." The incident happened Aug. 27 at an "unauthorized party involving alcohol."

District officials say the administration was notified three days later. They notified Oak Park police but say police asked them to hold off on doing their own investigation.

School officials say increasing concerns caused them to open up their own investigation two months later -- at the end of October.

Junior Lauren Flowers holds the student code of conduct. She has started a petition, asking the school to re-write and tighten policies on sexual harassment and misconduct.

"The policy is really messed up. It's very short it doesn't really explain how students or faculty are supposed to handle cases like this," she says.

Other students and parents say it's taken too long to get information about the alleged incident in august.

"They haven't done enough in terms of informing students," Paige Ross says.

Oak Park police decline comment.

The superintendent says the district is evaluating whether it should have conducted an investigation immediately, back in August.
