Arrest Warrant Issued In Slaying Of Security Guard In Harvey

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in south suburban Harvey have issued an arrest warrant for a 24-year-old wanted for the murder of a railroad security guard.

Harvey police said Rashad Williams is known to carry at least two guns at a time, and should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

Williams is wanted in connection with the shooting death of Tyrone Hardin, at a Canadian National railyard in Harvey on Saturday.

Police said Williams stole a car from a woman at a gas station Saturday afternoon at 159th and Halsted, and crashed less than a mile away as officers gave chase. He then allegedly ran under a viaduct, and up on the CN Railway tracks and into the nearby railyard, where he encountered Hardin and shot the guard in the stomach.

Williams also allegedly shot at someone else before stealing Hardin's car and fleeing the scene.

Investigators said witnesses reported hearing more than a dozen shots when Hardin was killed.

Harvey Police Deputy Chief Gregory Thomas appealed directly to Williams on Thursday.

"At this time, I'd like to extend a personal challenge to Mr. Williams to do what's right, sir, and turn yourself in. I also extend that challenge to Mr. Williams' family, friends, companions, and associates to do what's right: turn him in," Thomas said.

Police said Williams is a convicted felon, who is about 6 feet tall and weighs 170 to 190 pounds. He has hazel eyes and a medium complexion.

Hardin's family has said they plan to hold a wake and funeral for him on Dec. 10.
