Mom Gives Birth In Front Seat When Baby Boy Can't Wait

CHICAGO (CBS) -- When it became clear Tenisha Rambert's third child wasn't going to wait to get to the hospital to be born, she and her husband pulled over and delivered the baby at the side of the road in Bronzeville early Monday.

From the time mom and dad left home to the time their new baby was born was just 10 minutes.

Tenisha Rambert said she was getting ready for bed, rollers in her hair, when the contractions started. She and her husband, Marshall, hopped into their Ford Escape to begin driving to UIC Hospital at 1:45 a.m. A few minutes into the drive, it was clear their wasn't going to wait.

"All of a sudden, the contractions were coming faster and faster, and I told Marshall 'Call 911, we're not going to make it," she said.

Marshall pulled off the Dan Ryan Expressway, and was still looking for a place to stop when his son, Miller, was born in the front passenger's seat at 43rd and Dearborn streets at 1:55 a.m.

"She's screaming, the baby's screaming, I scream. It was just too much excitement all in one place, in one little tight area. So I was just hoping that I didn't swerve and hit no one," Marshall Rambert said.

By the time he pulled over, Tenisha had delivered their son.

"I just held him. I wrapped him up tight," she said. "I was just happy that he was crying, and okay. He had all his fingers, all his toes. So he was just amazing," Tenisha said.

Firefighters arrived a few minutes later, and helped mom and dad keep Miller warm until paramedics arrived to take Tenisha and Miller to Mercy Hospital & Medical Center.

"Other than that, she's cool. The baby is alright. We're happy. I'm just waiting to see my kids' reaction when they see their little brother when we get home," Marshall Rambert said.

Miller weighs 6 pounds and 11 ounces. Both he and his mother were resting at Mercy Hospital early Monday.

Tenisha said she's come to realize "every pregnancy is different, so just go along with the ride and have fun."

The Ramberts also have a 6-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son, who are excited to meet their baby brother.
