Aldermen Recommend Latest Settlements For Fatal Police-Involved Shootings

(CBS) – Two deadly police-involved shootings will cost Chicago nearly $10 million.

On Monday, a city council committee OK'd settlements with families.

City attorneys came under attack in one of the cases, CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports.

Aldermen grilled staff because a city lawyer knowingly withheld evidence that officers lied to cover up the 2011 wrongful shooting death of Darius Pinex.

"False reports were made, and that's the problem here," Ald. David Moore, Ward 17, said.

The family of Pinex -- a father of three -- filed suit. Officers pulled him over for driving a car they said was wanted in a shooting. A radio transmission later showed the officers lied about the car.

Another case settled was in the 2013 death of 17-year-old Cedrick Chatman.

Police cameras showed the unarmed suspected car thief was shot dead by police while running away. An officer fired four times "in fear of his life."

The Chicago City Council must approve the settlements.
