CHICAGO (CBS) — A suspect is in custody after a 34-year-old Wilmette man, who may have been out driving for a ride sharing service, was stabbed to death early Tuesday in north suburban Lincolnwood.

Lincolnwood police said Grant Nelson, of Wilmette, was stabbed around 3:20 a.m. near the intersection of Touhy and Lincoln avenues. Nelson was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead around 8 a.m.

CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar spoke with that man’s family and has the latest on the investigation.

Tuesday morning Grant Nelson’s car was still parked at the busy intersection of Lincoln and Touhy.

“We checked our security cameras, we saw the vehicle that’s in the middle of the road,” said Mike Mata, who works nearby.

Surveillance video from a nearby business shows Nelson’s car pulling out of a nearby apartment complex around 3:30 a.m.

“Saw a gentleman get out really, really slow,” Mata said.

The 34-year old’s car came to a stop right outside the apartment complex, but video surveillance and evidence markers suggest Nelson was walking along a grassy area before getting medical help.

“I wouldn’t wish that on anybody honestly,” said Alan Melendez, who works nearby.

Nelson just finished Memorial Day dinner with his family when he decided to make some extra cash and drive for Uber, according to his family. Described as a gentle and kind man with no enemies, Nelson’s father calling the killing random.

The ongoing investigation revealed Grant was working as an Uber driver and was dropping off a fare in the area when the attack occured.
