(CBS) –A driver was fatally injured in a Thursday evening shooting on the Dan Ryan Expressway, which ended in a crash that injured two passengers.

Before the shooting, around 5:15 p.m., two vehicles were reported driving erratically on I-94 northbound local lanes at 51st Street, Illinois State Police say.

One of the vehicles went up an embankment and crashed into a wall, while the other auto continued travelling northbound.

The driver was pronounced dead at an area hospital, state police say. Suffering injuries related to the crash were two women and a child; all were transported to the hospital.

The child is a 4-year-old girl, CBS 2’s Audrina Bigos reports.

Traffic was blocked for hours as state police investigated. Lanes were open by 10 p.m.
