Hobart Attorney T. Edward Page Shot, Killed; Suspect In Custody

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A well-known public defender in Northwest Indiana was fatally shot Wednesday by a former client.  T. Edward Page was shot shortly before noon in his home in the 1200 block of West Fourth Street in Hobart. according to the Lake County prosecutor's office.

The Lake County Coroner said Page, 64, died of gunshot wounds and declared the death a homicide.

Hobart police, during a press conference Wednesday night, said the suspect is an 83-year-old longtime friend and client. The suspect was invited to Page's home Wednesday to collect documents when he pulled out a gun and shot the attorney in front of his husband, according to Lt. James Gonzalez of the Hobart Police Department.

"There was nothing said at the time before the suspect shot him," he said.

Police said Page's husband tackled the suspect and took his gun.

A man, who has a client in a civil case, was taken into custody.

According to the Northwest Indiana Times, several police officers and representatives from the Lake County coroner were actively investigating the scene Wednesday afternoon.

According to an online bio, Page worked for Thiros and Thiros P.C. in Merrillville, Indiana.

Page also worked for the Lake County public defender's office.  Marce Gonzalez, the chief public defender, said Page planned to retire from the office at the end of the month. Gonzalez said Page was "a brilliant legal mind."

He planned to teach and serve as a fill-in judge, Gonzalez said.

Page's death is the second deadly shooting involving a prominent attorney in the Chicago area.

A partner at a prominent Chicago law firm was shot and killed Monday evening in north suburban Northfield, and a suspect was taken into custody after a standoff in neighboring Winnetka.
