3-Year-Old Fatally Shot In South Deering

CHICAGO (CBS)-- A 3-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in the South Deering neighborhood, and it appears the boy might have been playing with a gun.

Police responded to a residence in the 9600 block of South Escanaba Avenue at 4:15 p.m. Sunday.

Inside, they found a 3-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the face.

The boy was transported to Advocate Trinity Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The family told detectives they were in another room when they heard a gunshot, and found the boy with a gun.

Area South detectives and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services were investigating.
