Woman Killed While Trying To Keep Gunman Out Of Ravenswood Manor Apartment

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 27-year-old woman is dead after being shot in an Ravenswood Manor neighborhood apartment Monday evening.

The shooting took place around 9:32 p.m. in an apartment in the 4400 block of North Francisco Avenue, near Montrose Avenue.

CBS 2's Eric Cox has more on the story.

Stephanie Brooks is the 27-year-old woman. She was on the second floor of the apartment with a male friend, police said.

CPD confirmed that the murder was "connected to an individual associated with the shooting of a fireman" February 2  and are looking into the possibility of retaliation.

"Gang investigation resources have been moved into the district as this was very much a targeted incident," said police department spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez (33rd) said she just had a meeting with the owner of this building last week. They talked about better securing the property.

Loved ones said Brooks was visiting her friends Monday night around 9:30. They live in a second floor apartment on Francisco Avenue. Police said someone knocked on the door. A man who lives there opened up and a man wearing all black and a ski mask tried to come in.

Both Brooks and her friend frantically tried closing the door to keep him out when shots were fired.

Brooks was shot in the chest.

First responders rushed her to the hospital to save her life but the 27-year-old didn't make it. Loved ones said she was the mother of three. Her children include two girls and a boy.

Investigators told the alderman it looked like a targeted attack.

"It doesn't look like a random. They knew who they were coming for," Rodriguez-Sanchez said.

So far no arrests have been made.

Area North detectives were investigating.
