CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago has reached a grim murder milestone.

So far this year, Chicago Police said there have been 505 murders. During the same period last year, there were 333.

The number of shootings is also up significantly, at 2,152 to date this year compared with 1,413 for the same period last year.

The greatest number of murders Chicago has seen in one year is 970, a figure that dates back to 1974. The next greatest number is 943 in 1992.
