Best Choirs In Chicago

Hearing beautiful voices in unison is harmony at its best, and listening to a choir can be a magical and invigorating experience. September is Classical Music Month, so checking out one or more of these choir groups would be a great way to support the fine arts. Choirs are an amazing group of people who enjoy sharing their love of music and the voice for others to experience and enjoy. There is no better place than Chicago to find some of the best choirs in the country.

There are over 120 members of this choir who auditioned for their places in this historic choir. The members of the choir are men and women of all ages who come from a variety of backgrounds, each bringing their own unique flair to this ensemble. The Apollo Chorus has been around since 1872 and is led by music director and conductor Dr. Stephen Alltop.

Chicago Mass Choir is gospel at its best — the choir has won many awards and has been nominated for multiple Grammy and Stellar awards. They first recorded in 1990 and are currently under the leadership of Dr. Feranda Williamson, president and CEO. This small but intimate choir performs primarily a cappella works. Concerts performed by Chicago Choral Project are free to the public or in support of charitable partners. The choir is led by artistic director Jim Collins. Singers and the director are not paid, so 100 percent of donations go to the operating costs; there is a donation link on their website.

Chicago Children's Choir was founded in 1956 as a means to unite children from a variety of backgrounds. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing multicultural choral music education. The children in the choir range in age from eight to 18 with the bulk of the children coming from low-income households without the likelihood of having access to music education. Chicago Children's Choir is a national and international touring group in 25 countries on five continents and has performed for dignitaries and many noted celebrities.

The Choral-Aires Chorus is an international top 10 women's choral group that joins together in merriment of the art of barbershop music. The Choral-Aires Chorus consists of nearly 100 women of all ages who sing four-part harmony barbershop style in the chorus; all music is sung a cappella. The main drive of the group is to perform for the community. They perform at annual shows, community events and annual competitions, but the group is also available for hire for events. The Choral-Aires Chorus program is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
