Just about the time a new mom feels as though her mood swings and sleep schedule are more stable than the NASDAQ, and Dad no longer flinches when baby barf ruins yet another polo shirt, it’s time to get the damp little guy or girl some new duds. They tend to grow out of clothes as quickly as an afternoon nap. Choices in kids’ clothes have swelled like a disposable diaper in a swimming pool but you can count on the goods at these Chicago area indie apparel shops for the tinier humans in the family.

You have to love a place called ‘Psychobaby’ because if you watch the actions of a baby for just a little while, you’ll soon see these tiny humans are truly out of their little minds. Although it sounds like it could be a store for the son of Chuckie, Psychobaby offers “a line of cool, custom kids stuff, and custom items for the hip family home.” Look for baby clothing for girls and boys and modern lines from Rockabye Baby, Sourpuss, Trumpette, Pop Kids and others.
With a store in Wicker Park and Andersonville, owner Jennifer Pope says The Red Balloon has provided “over 16 years of stellar customer service with a small staff of sales people that love to help you find what you are looking for.” The shop offers a stylish and whimsical collection of clothing you can’t find elsewhere for ages newborn to 16 years old; they provide free gift wrapping, too. The business owner says, “We love to get to know our customers so we can send them customized photo albums and call them, upon request, when things they like come in.” Both shops participate in neighborhood events and promotions, and support Chicago schools with its Shop for Schools program.

Despite being ensconced in the same building that houses Nordstrom, Kooky Kids’ clothing isn’t absurdly overpriced as one might imagine. This is cool onesie central, with a lot in stock for both sexes. The baby and kids’ apparel and accessories are distinctive, so Kooky Kids is also a fine place for gifting the new or settled parents, especially for Chicago-themed clothes.
