Amanda's Sailor Shorts

Are you looking for a way to spice up your summer wardrobe with something that is equally versatile as it is fashion forward? My answer is SHORTS! Shorts are this summer's must have item and this season I have noticed more variety and originality than ever before. Like with everything, finding the right fit for your body type is key. With such an exciting array of shorts available, you will have no problem finding what works for you!

I decided to peruse one of Chicago's best-kept secrets and fashionable nightspot, Estelle's. Estelle's is nestled in the heart of Wicker Park: home of many cute shops, record stores, nightlife, and some of Chicago's finest fashion plates.

While in Estelle's I spotted Amanda (well actually I spotted her fabulous pin-up sailor inspired shorts first)! This is an example of how to dress a unique, posh, detailed short:

This look is impeccably polished. She let the stunning shorts have center stage and played down the rest of the look monochromatically. A simple, chic tucked in tank, funky, black open toed pumps, black clutch, turquoise cocktail ring and red lips completed this ensemble.

Creating your very own look can be emulated in a variety of ways. First step, pick a short that has an incredible detail, this can mean the cut, print, color, buttons, etc. In this case I chose an adorable high waist, floral print short by Kimchi Blue ($49) as seen at Urban Outfitters. This is the main feature and focal point of your outfit, everything else just adds to this look.

Now it's time to find pieces to compliment the shorts. You can choose to go monochromatic like Amanda or just stick to simple neutrals, there are no official rules. However, you do not necessarily want anything to compete or detract from the intrigue of the of shorts. I chose a sleeveless button front, flutter crop top ($58) from Free People. The cut of the top is interesting and unique, but because it's classic black it does not downplay the incredible print shorts (see even their model gets it).

Shoes can make a huge statement. Like Amanda, I chose a funky and interesting heel. Be sure to keep it neutral in hue so the shorts remain front and center. I found a great pair of black peep toe bootie heels ($39.99) online at Modcloth. These heels will give you a lot of mileage in future looks and seasons and certainly add a subtle, stunning appeal to your striking shorts.

Next, in keeping with the monochromatic theme, again like Amanda, I found a fun little black patent snake print clutch ($30) at Aldo. Perfect to hold your small wallet, cell phone and maybe some lip-gloss.

Finally, to finish off the look, I found an incredible cocktail ring by House of Harlow 1960 ($50) available at Nordstrom. Don't over think it when it comes to jewelry, one piece is enough.
