Man 'fixated on girlfriend' refuses to come down from tree

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man distraught over a romantic relationship who climbed about 20 feet up into a tree after cutting his wrists wouldn't come down for 2-1/2 hours, prompting a police presence in West Town.

The incident occurred about 3 a.m. Wednesday in the 1500 block of North Greenview Avenue, according to Shakespeare District police.

The man, in his early 30s, was apparently distraught over a relationship with his girlfriend and cut his wrists, police said.

He then climbed up into a tree near a residence his girlfriend was inside -- more than 20 feet above the street level -- and would not come down for about two and a half hours, police said.

"He was fixated on his girlfriend,'' said one officer.

Eventually police officers convinced him to come down and once he got closer to the ground they "grabbed" him and transported him to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, police said.

He will not be charged with anything because nothing he did was considered a crime, police said.
