CHICAGO (AP) — A spokesman says minister and state Sen. James Meeks will formally announce this weekend that he’s running for mayor of Chicago.

Meeks’ candidacy isn’t a surprise. Days after Mayor Richard Daley announced he wasn’t seeking re-election, Meeks started circulating petitions to get his name on the February ballot.

Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel is holding a weekend event in which he’s expected to announce his own run. And Congressman Danny Davis is expected to announce soon that he’s running.

City Clerk Miguel del Valle and former Chicago school board president Gery Chico have formally announced their candidacies.
