Teen Held On $1 Million Bond In Fatal Wreck

JOLIET (WBBM) -- A Will County judge has set bail at $1 million for a teenager accused of driving drunk, losing control of his SUV and killing a woman who was asleep in her Bolingbrook apartment early Saturday.

Those in the courtroom for the bond hearing say when 17-year-old Luis Benito heard the case against him, he threw his arms up and cried.

Benito is accused of driving with a blood alcohol level of .204 - more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

He is charged in the death of 48-year-old Josefina Prospero, who authorities say was killed as she slept - when Benito's vehicle crashed through her apartment.

Prospero's boyfriend was injured.

The Will County state's attorney says Benito is charged with four counts of aggravated DUI.

Prosecutors say Benito had been doing doughnuts in the parking lot of a Bolingbrook restaurant and bar before the crash - and that the bouncer said he had to jump to get out of the way after Benito drove toward him.

Authorities say Benito is in the country illegally and was driving without a valid license.

If convicted of the DUI charges, Benito faces up to 14 years in prison.
